The Year 6 Team

The Year 6 students have been working very hard with science this term. I would like to congratulate them on the great effort they have shown so far. We have been exploring micro-organisms and matter, where we have explored growing mould at home. Students showed great examples of their mould growth with images they presented to class. In the latter part of the term students explored matter where they showed their science experiments to the class in preparation for the science expo. They will get to be scientists for a day where they will showcase their experiments to other year levels.

Rida’s Explanation of her experiment

I started my mould experiment on Monday and I checked on everything every two days a week. I talked to you already about how I by accident put all my food items in one place. I put them in a warm cupboard. The items I used were tomato, cream cheese and wholegrain bread. The item on which I saw mould the first in the first week was my tomato. It had one patch of mould which was coloured white, mint green and a dark green. The next item on which I saw mould was the bread. In the second week it started getting mould. When I checked in the second week my bread had two blobs of mould coloured the same as the tomato. The cheese had slight changes in texture. It had hardened and gotten clumpy but there was no mould visible.

The second last set of pictures aren't in chronological order, but the rest of the pictures are.

The students enjoyed visiting Ceres where they had the opportunity to explore various habitats and test the water quality of Merri Creek. It was great to see them work as a team when completing their investigations.

In ICT this term, the students have worked hard to create animation and short story films they created using multi-media devices. The students have been challenged along the way but they have shown great effort with the work they have produced.

Have a great well-deserved holiday break. See you back in Term 4 ready for more crazy science experiments.

Regards,
Ms Cilek
